YOUTUBE ANIMATORS

For this section, we have decided to include two films from Jonni Philips, a 23-year-old CalArts graduate whose work explores themes of isolation and mental illness through surrealist and non-linear narratives. The first film is the one Jonni is most proud of and the second was created during the pandemic. The first film, Wasteland, is an anthology comprising five shorts. Each short is formally inconsistent with the others in order to display reality as fragile and subjective. The film stands in direct contrast to more mainstream animated films that favor clean lines, consistent style, and full color. Secrets and Lies in a Town Full of Sinners is an episodic series consisting of ten episodes and serves as the prologue to Jonni's upcoming film, Barber Westchester. The series takes a surrealist take on interpersonal relationships.By putting these two works side by side, we are trying to compare and contrast the two, highlighting differences in terms of form and narrative. Has the pandemic shifted the subjects explored by animators or do they remain largely the same?
