NEW FILMMAKERS

“New Filmmakers” explores the cinematic work and creative perspectives of emerging filmmakers, with a focus on Canada and China. The program includes both documentary and narrative films, which deal with a wide range of intersecting themes, including isolation, coming-of-age, generational trauma, migration, and more. The accompanying interviews contextualize the work and provide insight on how this new generation of creators have been affected personally, professionally, and creatively by the COVID-19 pandemic. This collection of thoughts and expressions offers a glimpse into the future of cinema and how it is being shaped by our current times. The curatorial team also hopes that this program will benefit these filmmakers by giving them the opportunity to share their work with a global audience, and that viewers will be encouraged to seek out the work of other emerging creators.
